Béla IV was one of Hungary's most significant medieval kings, often called the "second founder of Hungary" because he rebuilt the country after the devastating Mongol invasion of 1241-1242. He introduced major reforms and helped Hungary recover from this catastrophic period, including building numerous stone castles and fortifications to better defend against future invasions.
This is a Denier (or Denár in Hungarian), which was the standard silver coin of medieval Hungary.
Obverse: Features a crowned head facing forward with long hair, with the Latin inscription "+REX BELA" (King Béla)
Reverse: Displays a standing eagle with open wings facing right, enclosed in a pearl circle
This hammer-struck silver coin is remarkably tiny—smaller than a U.S. dime. While such small denominations were standard in medieval Europe, their diminutive size posed practical challenges, as they could easily slip through the smallest tears in clothing and purses.
