1975 Mozambique 50 Centimos w/ Samora Machel & cashews. Minted in first year of independence but never circulated and most were destroyed. Part of planned 'metica' currency derailed by post-independence chaos. Some fascinating history behind this one.
On June 21, 1975, just days after independence, Mozambique's new government authorized their Central Bank to produce new coins and banknotes based on the 'metica'--not to be confused with the 'metical' which went into effect in 1980. The Royal Mint (UK) was commissioned to strike these coins, featuring President Samora Machel on one side (on ALL the denominations) and Mozambiquan products on the other, cashews in the case of the 50 centimos.
As civil war erupted, the currency reform was abandoned. The Portuguese Mozambican escudo remained in circulation until 1980, when the 'metical' was finally introduced. Most of these metica coins were destroyed in East Germany and the 50 centimos is especially rare.
